NFHS high school football: NeuroGuard+ is permissible under the 2026 rules

The National Federation of State High School Associations has determined that NeuroGuard+ is permissible for use in high school football. Following a review by both the NFHS Football Rules Committee and the NFHS Sports Medicine Advisory Committee (SMAC), Bob Colgate, NFHS Director of Sports and Sports Medicine, issued this interpretation1: "Upon further review by the NFHS Football Rules Committee and the NFHS Sports Medicine Advisory Committee (SMAC), we have determined the NeuroGuard+ mouthguard for Football does comply with the intent and purpose of NFHS Rule 1-5-1d(5) on page 24 of the 2026 NFHS Football Rules Book and thus would be permissive at this time."

NFHS writes the rule books used by 51 state associations and approximately 19,500 high schools3, so this determination reaches high school football programs across the country. Athletes wear NeuroGuard+ on its own — the determination is that the NeuroGuard+ appliance itself satisfies the rule, not that it is worn in combination with anything else. NFHS other sports: mouthguard mandates vary, and several have no arch specification
